The bright and sunny month of June was officially proclaimed by President Obama as National Caribbean American Heritage Month.  For 2016, the MaHDDEnergy Man himself will share some exciting time at the 11th Annual Charleston Carifest 2016, on Carnival Day.

The Essence of Carnival

Read more about the history of Carnival to get a more rounded look at these festivities.  Here are a couple of excerpts:    

"...The Caribbean Carnival...is a celebration of the end of slavery as well as an affirmation of survival.

The four elements of Carnival are song, music, costume and dance, which translate as calypso/soca, steelpan, mas (masquerade) and 'wine' (dance)...."

"...Costumes...are important symbols of African tradition.  Feathers were used as headdresses to symbolize the ability to persevere and rise above anything and to take flight on the journey into spiritual rebirth...." Read More.

Carnival Day 

Street Parade

The street parade starts at 4:00 PM in the cooler afternoon time.  

Celebration in the Park

Marketplace starts at 5:00 PM and ends at 10:30PM.  No coolers allowed.  Blankets, chairs, tents, etc. okay.  Tickets, $10.00, Children under 12 FREE.
